Each year, Lakeside Arts at the University of Nottingham host Lustre, a contemporary Craft Fair that albeit on a smaller scale, certainly rivals Origin or Desire.The fair is set in both the D H Lawrence Pavillion and the Djanogly Art Gallery, with tables set up in co-ordinated coverings which give the event a very clean, contemporary feeling. Whilst it is rather jewellery and ceramic heavy, the quality of all the work is always very high, and I look forward to the show every year.
Some of the designers that really stood out for me included Birmingham based Kate Gilliand, who marries taxidermy and jewellery. Far from being macabre, I thought her pieces were curious and surprisingly delicate. But then again she does seem to share my love of the scientific and museum aesthetic in art, so maybe I am biased. Shrew earrings anyone?
Katie Heeks makes gorgeous 3D pictures using laser cut birch plywood and fabric. Whilst laser cutting has been a popular craft technique for a few years now, Katies colourful dioramas are so different. Her whimsical 'Gardens' are jam packed with plants and little creatures they are certain to brighten up any home.
And in the Young Meteors catagory, Suet Yi Yip's work encompasses both tactile pieces based on nature and handmade plates featuring her own gorgeous illustrations, which remind me of Enid Blyton books.
